Day 67: Homer to Seward

June 20, 2014

Today we awoke to a beautiful sunny day. It was the prettiest day we have had since Donna and Barry arrived. When we opened the front window we noticed all these gulls right off shore. Then there was a whale spout, and another. How cool is it to wake up in Alaska and look out your front window and see whales. Oh how blessed we are!

As we planned yesterday we first went to Two Sisters Bakery for breakfast. There was savory ham and cheese, and sticky buns. Wow, they were good. Then for taking home there was chocolate ginger cookies and chocolate bread. Again, very good! If we make it back to Homer we will definitely be going back to Two Sisters. For any of our friends headed to Homer – you will not be sorry if you pay them a visit. They also have breads by the loaf and various sandwiches etc.

Shortly after that we headed for Seward. We had wonderful views of Mount Redoubt and Iliamna (both volcanoes) as they were both completely visible on this beautiful clear day and both we releasing steam. How cool it that!

We also went back through the Russian River area and again there were fishermen everywhere, shoulder to shoulder on the river going after salmon.
Not too long after that we turned south on Alaska 9 to Seward. It was a very pretty drive with numerous lakes and mountains.

After getting set up in the campgound, Stoney Creek, we headed to Exit Glacier at Kenai Fjords National Park. We hiked up to the base of the glacier – just a couple of miles. Exit Glacier got its name because it was the exit point of the first recorded crossing of the Harding Icefield in 1968. It is the only part of the park accessible by road. The Rangers at the visitors center were very nice and helpful. If the rain holds off tomorrow we may go back and hike to the Icefield, but there are just so many interesting hikes to choose from in this area we haven't decided exactly what we will do tomorrow.
