Day 52: Valdez to somewhere south of Delta Junction

June 5, 2014

We awoke to another bright, beautiful and sunny morning. Before breakfast we saw a sea otter swimming around in the harbor just outside Fred. We are so blessed to be able to see and enjoy this wonderful place. We are still talking about our wonderful cruise yesterday and realized there were more pictures we needed to share.

Sign seen in town. They also have tsunami sirens.
We seriously considered changing our plans and staying in Valdez another day or two but then reminded ourselves that we wanted Donna and Barry to have a good well rounded taste of Alaska so the four of us decided we should move along as previously planned.

We left Valdez in route to Fairbanks. We didn't know how good/bad the roads would be so planned to stop about half way today. In the lower 48 we certainly would have driven the 362 miles in one day but we are talking Alaska miles here – and in the motor home, towing the truck. There were sections of pavement in quite good condition but many more miles of not so good – lots of frost heaves. We drove about 45mph on most of the trip today. We stopped for some caching and enjoying the scenery. We also made a side trip thru old Copper Center. The oil pipeline paralleled us for most of the day. We got some good views of it today. We are actually now 135 miles from Fairbanks. We stopped at a lovely roadside pullout, did some hiking and caching and decided to just spend the night here. Hopefully it will be a quiet and restful night. By the way, sunset is not until after midnight. It is never dark – just a little dusky.

Tomorrow we plan to go to North Pole and visit with Santa.
