Day 64: Soldotna to Homer

June 17, 2014

We awoke to a pretty sunny day this morning. After having breakfast (finished off the last rudy and the sweet rolls) and finalizing some additional plans for the next few days, we left the Fred Meyers parking lot en route for Homer, Alaska. Unfortunately, the further we drove the less sun we saw. It was another beautiful drive even without full sun. Shortly after leaving Soldotna we saw another moose and then either a golden eagle or immature bald eagle. We stopped at a beautiful state recreation site to view the Kenai River and stretch our legs. Then we arrived at the little town of Ninilchik and which is mostly known for the great salmon fishing available there. We stopped at the Deep Creek Recreational Area there just to take a look.

We thought it might be where we could see some eagles and where we had heard about launching boats from the beach with tractors. Well we hit the jackpot. We immediately started seeing bald eagles. They are such beautiful, majestic birds we just can't quit taking pictures. We have one shot with 5 eagles.
This was also the correct place to see the boat launching. That was so much fun to watch. The pictures we took to share with you were actually the smallest of three boats we saw this morning. The other two were just gray and didn't photograph as well. It looks like they are going to sink the tractor launching the boat.

We then moved on to Homer and to our campground (Baycrest RV Park) above the Kachemak Bay. We pulled into our site forward so our windshield would overlook the bay. We almost couldn't get the rig set up for watching and photographing the eagles. We then headed out the Homer Spit but not without first stopping at the campground store to sample some of the 24 flavors of soft serve ice cream.
We walked on the rocky beach of the Homer Spit, enjoyed the beauty of the Pacific Ocean, walked in to a few shops, watched some people fishing – and catching flounder and black cod. One young man being so proud of his star fish. We then had halibut fish and chips in an old double-decker bus for dinner – very good!
As we were wandering around Homer we saw this on a window and found out how they forecast weather
After walking on the rocky beach at the end of Homer Spit we watched a couple of bald eagles near their nest. One was being harassed by a raven.

Currently as we sit here in Fred writing this blog it is very difficult to concentrate.
Right now at 7:10 pm there is a beautiful bright sunny sky, gorgeous snow capped mountains across the bay and we just looked up to see 3 beautiful bald eagles headed straight toward the windshield. OK – got to go take some more pictures. Tomorrow is a hiking day and probably more eagle pictures.
