Day 51: Columbia Glacier

June 4, 2014

Today was another bright and sunny day. It started with cooking breakfast outside on the picnic table and then taking a little drive outside of Valdez. We were checking out the trails. We were stopped by an avalanche and had to return to Valdez. First time we have ever been stopped by an avalanche.

We then went on the 6 hour Stan Stephens Columbia Glacier Cruise. Incredible! Simply Incredible! We will let the pictures speak for themselves.

We saw:

Sea otters:

Harbor seals:

A sea lion colony:

Humpback whales:

And the glacier:

The Captain worked the ship expertly through the ice
And large chunks of brilliant blue ice:

And as we were leaving the glacier area this beautiful bald eagle posed on a block of ice for us

Map of our trip
The day ended equally amazing when we ate dinner outside on the patio at The Fat Mermaid (halibut tacos and fish and chips) and 2 beautiful bald eagles landed in a tree right nearby. Yes, we did have a camera!

Tomorrow we will with some sadness leave this beautiful place and start our drive toward Fairbanks.
