Day 99: Road Construction to Fairbanks

July 22, 2014

This morning it was cloudy, 51 degrees, but not raining. We had no rain again all day today and by this afternoon we had some sunshine.

After breakfast and some clean up, we pulled the slides in and headed for Fairbanks. We knew there was a lot of construction on the Parks Highway, but we had heard differing stories as to travel time to Fairbanks due to that construction. It wasn't that bad in June when we made the trip from Fairbanks to Denali. However, we talked to the archivist at University of Alaska Fairbanks, and she didn't think we could make a late afternoon appointment with her based on what she had been told about the highway. That was a little depressing. We left at 11:00 am and by 11:45 we had gone a whopping 8 miles. Most of the time we spent waiting for a pilot car to lead us through the area. Fortunately things improved considerably after that. We still had construction and still had delays and areas requiring pilot cars but at least with the motor home you can just put it in park and fix lunch while you wait. We actually got to Fairbanks at 2:30 pm – not too bad. A lot better than others have experienced - over 6 hours. The good news is that the areas they have completed are really nice smooth highway with no pot holes or frost heaves. It should be a really nice drive when they complete the work. Here's hoping that next winter doesn't destroy it again.
There are not enough "bump" signs in the world for this highway today.

Since we need to go to the University we decided to go back to Riverview RV Park for 2 nights and go ahead and resupply for the trip back across Canada. We will be in and out or Alaska and Canada for the next several weeks as we start working our way back south. After we finish in Fairbanks, we will move to Chena Lakes Recreation Area a few miles further out of Fairbanks. We drove out there this afternoon to take a look and saw a young male ptarmigan walking down the road. They have nice bike trails and nature trails and nice large wooded sites.
We then went to the Pogoda Chinese restaurant again. Very good and we have enough leftovers for another meal or two.

That's about it for this travel day. We will see what we can get into tomorrow.
