Day 101: Move to Chena Lake Recreation Area

July 24, 2014

RAIN! That sums up today. It started raining during the night and has rained all day. Sometimes lighter, sometimes heavier, occasionally down to a drizzle for a very short time then harder rain again. Temps this morning were in the lower 50's climbing to mid 60's mid day but still chilly in the rain. We have talked to a number of Fairbanks residents and are assured that it is usually “hot” and dry in July. We would like some usual weather.

We moved today anyway. Really wanted a less expensive spot since the laundry was all done and wanted some hiking and biking trails, so we chose to move to Chena Lake Recreation Area. This area was built by the Corps of Engineers after the big Fairbanks flood in 1967 when numerous levys were build to prevent further flooding. We usually get ½ price camping at COE parks. However, this park has been transferred to the borough so no discounts. The park reminds us of Williwaw so we opted to pay the $20.00/night rate. However what we didn't know was that there is an additional $5.00 for the truck. There are no hookups here so $25.00/night really is not a good value. Williwaw was great and only $9.00/night with our discount. This is a nice park – if the mosquitoes don't carry you off, but we can't really recommend it due to the cost. It is saving us about $20.00 from where we were so we hope to get some better weather.

We did get out and do a little walking on the bike trail when the rain was light so we and Scout could get a little exercise. Other than that it was a quiet day of reading and a little TV. We enjoyed another Chistmas movie in July.

Sorry for nothing more exciting - maybe tomorrow.
