Day 119: Fish Creek Bears

August 11, 2014

Today there is no rain!!  Forecast was for 40% chance, but no rain and it was a beautiful day!  It was also terribly hot today with a high of 75.  We had to use sunscreen and wore short sleeve t-shirts. But it was still a great day.

There isn't that much to say about today.  After breakfast we headed out to Fish River to try to photograph the bears.  We stayed there until about 2:00, went back to Fred to walk Scout and rest a little.  We then went back to the river about 4:30 and didn't leave until 8:30 tonight.  Most of the time was spent waiting on the silly bears to make their appearances and we spent that time talking to others about where they have traveled, cameras, camera lens, and solving the problems of the world.  We had to go through Canadian Customs twice today.  The agents at this site are very nice and recognize us by now and basically take our passports and scan them in to the system with our tag number, ask us if we made in purchases in Hyder, have any weapons and send us on our way with a “see you tomorrow.”

We got good pictures and videos of the bears today.  One of the bears has been named Jaws by the Forestry Service because it had an injury to its mouth several years ago and still has evidence of the injury.  Jaws is good at fishing, but for some reason today was releasing about three out of four catches.

Another is tagged in each ear.  She is something like 13 years old and they call her Mira.  Both of these are grizzlies.   Mira wasn't very successful at fishing today, but did eat some of the fish Jaws had killed and left.

There is another grizzly who comes around often, but he in only about 3-4 years old and doesn't have a name or tags at this time.  Then there are black bears and one black cub that we know of.  There has also been a wolf coming around most days for the past week, but so for that has always been when we haven't been around.  We were hoping to see him today, but he didn't make an appearance at all today.  Maybe tomorrow.

We stopped at “The Bus” for supper.  Halibut fish and chips.  It gets good ratings on TripAdvisor and we had heard about it from some other RVers.  It lived up to it's reputation.  Also some other RVers tried the fish chowder and said it was wonderful.  Salmon, halibut and snapper in a chowder.  Sounds good, but we could barely eat all our halibut, so we didn't try the chowder.

Just a few pictures today because we have horrible internet tonight.  We will post additional pictures when we have better service.

Probably more of the same tomorrow except we might go see Salmon Glacier.  Or we may just hang out with the bears again.
