Day 121: Slow Day in Hyder

August 13, 2014

This morning was a little cooler than the previous two but again warmed up quickly and we had another beautiful sunny day with a high of 77.

Today we stopped by the bakery for breakfast on the way to bear viewing. Again it was very good and is run by some very nice local folks. For anyone else coming to Stewart and Hyder, the bakery is Temptations and is on main street in Stewart.

It was a bust at the bear viewing this morning. One person who was there at 6:00 am said he saw a bear about 6:30 and then nothing else. We headed back to Fred about 10:30 to cook some lunch and do a little work. We stopped by the Hyder dock on the way. There was a sign panel there that explained the stubs of old pilings we had been seeing. There was a “town” - few businesses - built on those pilings at the time of the first gold strike in this area. When the miners started arriving they named the area Portland City. When gold prices were frozen and the mines closed, the town was abandoned. Click on the picture of the sign for more information.

We cooked lunch and did some work around the rig, some trip planning, and then headed back out to hopefully see some bears. We had just about given up and then finally the bear they call dog bear came through. We got some pretty good pictures and video of him fishing just before 6:00 tonight.  We are only posting one due to limited internet and you are probably tired of bear pictures, anyway. He hung around for about 45 minutes. It is tiring waiting on a bear to show up, but so much fun when they do.

That's it for today. We got most of the necessary things done this afternoon to prepare to move on toward southern Canada tomorrow. We haven't really decided if we are going to move are stay here another day or two. We plan to get up early to go back to the bear viewing in the morning and then, who knows. We may extend here for 2 more days or we may move on out. We would really like to see a wolf catching salmon and we haven't been there for that yet. No one has seen a wolf the past three days, since it has been sunny and “hot” according to the locals. Prior to that they were seen for about 5 days in a row.  The next 2 days are suppose to be cloudy and a little cooler so.....might the wolves come back?? Decisions, decisions. Check back tomorrow and see what we decide.
