Today was another beautiful day in this part of Canada and Alaska. The morning temp was in the low 50's and the high of 77. We decided to stay in Stewart/Hyder one more day. It was a sad day as well. When we left Hyder tonight it was the last time we would be in Alaska. The Alaska portion of our trip is over. We still have places to go and things to do, but we had to say goodbye to the beautiful, vast wilderness of Alaska. We have seen unbelievable beauty, awesome wildlife and made some wonderful new friends. Hopefully we can return one day.
Goodbye, Alaska |
We got up at 5:00 this morning so we could be out bear viewing at 6:00, hoping to see a wolf. Surprise, surprise. Just as we left the campground a wolf ran across the road in front of us. Sorry no picture. Didn't expect one right then. Unfortunately, that was the only wolf we saw today. We didn't see any bears this morning either.
We went back to Temptations bakery to get something for breakfast and arrived just as a batch of blueberry muffins were coming out of the oven. They were delicious! Then back to Fred to take care of some work and maintenance items, do some more trip planning and take a nap. We also took Scout for a nice walk down to the Bear River. On the way back we stopped by a raspberry patch and let him pick a few. Then we spent a while on Scout maintenance before we hit the road again. Since he didn't get to experience an Alabama summer this year he doesn't know when to shed, so he sheds all the time.

One of the joys of traveling with a lab |
After an early dinner we went back out to try to see some bears. They really put on a show for us on our last night here. There was a black bear and 2 grizzlies. They went up and down the creek eating berries and catching salmon. We have some more good pictures and videos that we will share later. It is just so much fun to watch these magnificent creatures. At times they appear so clumsy and then so graceful. They make loud noise going through the woods and then suddenly disappear without a sound. You can walk right by them and never know they are there. Such a fun way to end our time in Alaska.

Tomorrow it is on farther south and a resupply stop at a Safeway we hope. The pantry is pretty bare.
