July 10, 2014
Well, unfortunately the forecasters have
been accurate. RAIN! It rained all night and was raining when we got
up this morning. It quit so Scout could have his morning walk. We
decided that since they allow you to wash you motor home here –
most do not allow washing your rig at your site – that we would get
a layer or two of the dirt off. It's not like we would do at home
and we know it will be dirty by the time we leave this parking lot
but we just had to clean it up a little. We know we have helped
reduce the mosquito population in Alaska. At least now their carcasses are off
the front end of Fred. However, we did notice more chips in the
paint on the front. Poor Fred. At least for now – no chips in the
windshield. The rain held off until we finished and then about 3:00
pm it returned and continues to rain now at 8:30 pm and shows no sign of stopping.
Otherwise, today we did laundry and some inside cleaning. You just have to take a day off
from playing and get a little work done occasionally. Somebody asked
us about laundry. Sometimes we use the laundromat. That costs
anywhere from $2.50 to $4.50 a load to wash and $2.50 a load to 25 cents per 4 minutes per to dry. So about the least expensive is $5.00 per load and can go up
considerably from there. We have a washer/dryer combo in our motor
home and it is our preference to use when possible. However, we need
water and sewer connections for that and a lot of campgrounds in
Alaska do not have either one of those. The lower 48 – not a
problem. Some people don't like the combo washer/dryer but we have
learned to use it quite successfully. There is definitely a learning
curve. It is a lot different from using my home machines. It takes
lots less detergent and softener – only 1-2 tbs per load. We
have one picture for you today. The laundry drying. We have a nice
shower in our rig and we have placed a shower rod above the enclosure
to use for drying. We have found that the best way to use our combo
unit is to make combination loads – some things that we pull out
and dry in the shower and the other portion – like the cotton jeans
are folded, creased and placed back in the dryer. They come out
great, with creases! The quick dry shirts and pants are hung in the shower and
we place our electric ceramic heater in the enclosure and make a
little drying room by partially closing the shower door. The quick dry clothes are dry by the time the jeans are
dry and also with no wrinkles.
So that's it for today. Tomorrow we
plan to go to a local gallery that comes highly recommended. What else
we do depends on the rain.
